Edition 17 - Friday 10th February
Year 1 Visit to the Museum of Childhood

On Tuesday this week, Year 1 went on a visit to the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. The boys enjoyed looking at toys from the past, as far back as Victorian times. We had a workshop session in the afternoon where the boys worked in groups and sorted toys into old and new. They also made a doll each using a peg and a piece of fabric. At the end of the day the boys received a goodie bag which contained some stickers and a keyring of a modern day vehicle.

Year 8 Art Trip to the National Portrait Gallery

On Wednesday 1st February, Year 8 went to the National Portrait Gallery for a workshop on the theme ‘Image and Identity’. The boys were given a talk about various pieces of artwork in the gallery, looking at the symbolic, cultural and historical aspects of portraiture. They then spent time drawing a specific painting or sculpture in the various galleries and presented them to each other at the end of the session. We even got Mr Patel drawing!

The boys were excellently behaved and answered questions thoughtfully and sensitively. They were respectful of the gallery environment and polite to staff and other visitors. We made a quick stop to M&M World before having a well-deserved lunch at Planet Hollywood.

A good time was had by all. HS

Year 3 Visit to the Ragged School Museum

On Wednesday, February 8th 2012, Year 3 visited the Ragged School Museum.

First of all Michelle spoke to us and prepared us for a lesson as a Victorian school boy.

We went to the classroom, which looked very different from our own classrooms, and met Hilary. She told us that she would become Miss Perkins, a very strict Victorian teacher.

We had a lesson where we learnt the alphabet, practised writing on a slate and did the 3 ‘R’s.

We had to be quiet and sit up straight.  She had a cane and told us off if our hands were dirty.

The punishments were the backboard, the finger trap and the dunce’s hat.

After this, we went to a Victorian kitchen and saw how hard life was for poor people in Victorian times.  They had no machines and no running water.

Then we went to the shop and got on the coach to come home. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed ourselves.

The Winter Boots

(Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this)

Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her reception class pupils put on his boots?
He asked for help and she could see why.
Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots
still didn't want to go on.

By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat.
She almost cried when the little boy said, 'Teacher,
they're on the wrong feet.'

She looked, and sure enough, they were.
It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was
putting them on.

She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.
He then announced, 'These aren't my boots.'
She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, 'Why didn't you say so? ' like she wanted to.
Once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting
boots off his little feet.

No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, 'They're my brother's boots. My Mum made me wear 'em.'
Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry.
But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again.
Helping him into his coat, she asked, 'Now, where are your
mittens?'

He said, 'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots.'
She will be eligible for parole in three years.
