Our Trip to see The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz!

On Wednesday 11th January Bickley Park Prep School were off to see The Wizard of Oz! We were extremely excited. I went with the whole of my house in a gigantic purple coach; I just couldn’t wait to get to the Palladium Theatre, London! This would be an experience that I couldn’t miss!

When we arrived, we made our way to our seats in the Circle. I felt tremendously excited and couldn’t wait for the show to begin.

The Wizard of Oz is a story about a little girl called Dorothy and her dog, Toto. The pair are swept away from their home in Kansas and find themselves in an imaginary world called Oz. They need to search for the Wizard in the Emerald City in order to get home. My highlight in the first act was meeting the Scarecrow. He was a funny character who made me laugh.

After the interval, the characters were creeping through the forest to reach the witch’s castle. This was a scary scene and the flying monkeys were terrifying. At the end of the show, Dorothy returned to Kansas and woke in her bedroom, making us think that it had all been a dream. The journey home went quickly.

Overall, I thought that this trip was amazing. I loved it all, especially when Dorothy and her friends met the Wizard towards the end of the show. The Wizard created fire, which was very exciting! I would like to thank all of the teachers for taking us there, and especially Mr Stein, who organised the trip.

For those of you who are interested in attending this event, please note that it will take place this year on Thursday 21st June at Westerham Golf Club. I have managed to secure 7 tee-off slots so we will be restricted to 28 players. Further details will be sent out at the start of next term.

Reception Visit Orpington Fire Station

On Thursday 19th January Reception boys had a great treat and visited Orpington Fire Station as part of our topic ‘People who help us’.

We were given a guided tour of the station including the day room and the control room, where information about ‘shouts’ are put through. The boys were shown some of the contents of the fire engine including an axe, an infra-red camera, hoses and ladders. The important safety clothing was discussed and then modelled by Mrs Read.

As luck would have it, whilst we were there, a ‘shout’ was received and the boys helped to put out a car fire!

It was a very enjoyable and worthwhile visit with several re-enactments of the fire incident in the Role Play Area since! Lots of budding firemen in the making!

Thank you very much to the Orpington Fire Station Officers!

Year 4 Visit to the British Museum

Last Tuesday, Year 4 travelled by coach to the British Museum to find out all about the Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks. We had great fun looking at Roman mosaics, discovering what statues still remain and learning about Roman lives in Britain when they invaded. It was surprising to see how many artefacts are still around!

After lunch, it was time to explore the Ancient Greeks. We found out about their gods and some of the groups even had a bit of time to create their own gods! Very fierce-looking indeed! Our favourite statues were of Mithras slaying the bull and the man balancing on a crocodile! The displays on the daily lives of Greek women and children were particularly interesting.

We encourage everyone to visit this fantastic museum or, at least, visit their website where you can scroll through the exhibits and play a few interactive games. Our trip was great fun and it definitely brought the past to life!

Plea from the DT Department:

Dear Parents and Friends

In Survival Club we are endeavouring to build our very own life size Tepee!!

We have the poles from a recently cut down tree on site and we are currently working on them to prepare them for the inner structure. However, we are in desperate need of strong fabric for the outer part of the tepee. We need approx 15 sqm2 for the covering, which is a lot of fabric!! So my plea is for any old clothes, curtains, tablecloths, towels, bedsheets or pieces of leather, canvas, denim, basically any strong fabric that we could patch together to form our tepee outer shell. We will make use of all colours and types as long as it’s strong. Please send them in with your boys or leave them at the office labelled FAO: DT Dept.

Your help is much appreciated! Many thanks in advance,

Dee Wheeler
