The week culminated with the enormously fun ‘Dress Up Day’ on Friday. A myriad of characters replaced our normal Bickley Boys: James Bond made an appearance, as did Prince Caspian, Harry Potter, Where’s Wally, Ben Ten, Peter Pan and many other famous book characters.

Year 6 Trip To See ‘Billy The Kid’

On the 4th of October, Year 6 travelled to London by train to watch the play ‘Billy the Kid’ at the Unicorn Theatre. The play, based on a book by Michael Morpurgo, is about a young man – Billy – whose hopes of being a Chelsea footballer are dashed by the start of the Second World War. The entire play was acted out by two main characters and Dudley Sutton, a famous elderly actor, impressively acted out all the stages of Billy’s life, from young boy to old man.

The boys and the staff had a great day out, which included lunch, ice creams, watching the play and then a stroll down the Embankment to admire the ships and boats before returning to school in the afternoon.

7JD Assembly

Last Friday, Form 7JD held an assembly about cycling. Mr Harradine, who liaises with Bromley Council’s cycling department, kindly came in to promote bike riding and exhibit different kinds of bikes. One of the themes in the assembly dealt with cycling to and/or from school with a parent or parents.

A cycle shelter was installed last year by Bromley Council, with separate lockers for helmets. Mrs Marriott has been given cycle permits by the council to give out to those who would like to consider getting their bikes out. She also has padlocks for the helmet lockers.

I live in Petts Wood and sometimes cycle to school through Jubilee Park and along Hawthorne road, part of Route 22 of the designated local cycle network. It is a very pleasant way of travelling to and from school. If practical, why not talk it over with your son or sons!!

E-Safety Talk

This week our Safer Schools Community Police Officer, Sue Kennedy, came in to talk to parents about the risks of the internet. The talk was very well received by the parents who were able to attend and the videos Sue showed challenge complacency around a boy’s use of computers. In the words of one of our parents, it was “a very, very worthwhile event that simply must be re-run to reach a much wider audience”. Sue would be happy to come in to school again if the demand is there. Please contact me if you would be interested in attending the event in the Spring or Summer Terms.

Sainsbury’s Vouchers – Thank You!

1

We have received most of the P.E. equipment from the Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s vouchers that you helped collect during the summer term. The boys and girls have been playing with it on the playground and having great fun! Also this week Reception boys have been using some within their P.E. lessons.

Freshwater Theatre Company – Early Years’ Story Hunt

On Monday 10th October, Reception boys were in for a treat and went on a hunt in search of a story. Beginning in their classrooms they were led by Mark, our explorer, into the hall.

Boys met ‘Big Bird,’ on the golden chair with great delight, who wanted them to find the clues for the special story. There was a trek up the hill, through the sticky sand and then the hot sand to the seaside. Boys picked up lots of clues including coloured ribbons and various instruments along the way. These were all then used after a very short, quiet stop off at the bear’s cave to produce a group story.

An enjoyable and educational time was had by all!

Pumpkin Fun

Today we watched Mrs Spiteri carving a pumpkin. First she used a very sharp knife to cut the top off the pumpkin and we all guessed what we thought would be inside. We all thought it would be sweets. We were disappointed to find yucky, smelly, orange stuff inside. We all put our hand inside to see what it felt like. We then watched Mrs Spiteri get a large spoon to scoop out the inside; she then put a tea-light in and lit it. We turned the lights out and were amazed to see a scary face appear.

A few reminders

Could I please ask that entrance to both departments is through the pedestrian gates and not through the traffic entrances – this is obviously for safety reasons as cars and delivery vehicles entering and exiting are not always expecting to see small children.

Boys in Year 6 and above are allowed to use black bags rather than the Bickley school bag. Of late, a number of coloured bags or bags with logos are starting to appear. Could these please be replaced with a plain black bag.

With half term approaching, could I please remind all that hair length is becoming an issue again with some. Hair should be smart and off the collar.
